shop share: Little Michaels

This week I am putting the spotlight on Kelsie from Little Michaels. I shared a little bit about her shop in my post about Tim's birthday yesterday and am excited for y'all to get to know her and her shop a little bit more!

What is the name of your shop and how did you come up with it?

My shop name is "Little Michael's". I have to give my husband full credit for the name. I racked my brain for several days trying to come up with the perfect name. I finally asked him and he immediately responded with "Little Michael's". My shop is named after my son, Michael, who was born prematurely, and the well-know crafting store, Michaels.

What do you make in your shop and how can we find you?

I make custom birthday party and baby shower decorations. You can find me on ETSY https://www.etsy.com/shop/LittleMichaels or on Instagram @little_michaels

Tell us a little about yourself and your family.

My name is Kelsie. I was born and raised in Southern Indiana. I'm married to my high school sweetheart, Braden. We started dating in 2003 and got married in June of 2013 after 8 years of a long distance relationship due to college. I graduated from Indiana State University in 2010 with a Bachelor's Degree in Human Development and Family Studies. My husband attended Perdue University and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2012. We have a two-year-old son, Michael Owen.

How did you get started?

When I was pregnant with Michael I developed preeclampsia which turned into HELLP Syndrome in a matter of hours. If you are unaware of preeclampsia, please educate yourself. Michael was born at 33 weeks and weighed just 3 pounds at birth. He spent the first 22 days of his life in the NICU and arrived home at a little over 4 pounds. Since he was so small and it was the middle of flu season, we spent a lot of time at home together. I worked for the Blue Envelope intermittently during this time and began to wonder how I could stay at home with Michael and do something I enjoy.

When Michael's first birthday rolled around I knew I wanted to create something extra special for him to celebrate his first year of life. With the help of a great friend and family members, I did just that. I created an event that I will remember for the rest of my life, and the pictures are something Michael can treasure at every age. Looking back, this partly truly sparked my interest in starting my own business.

Does anyone help you with your shop?

For the most part, it's just me! I work well before Michael wakes up in the mornings and answer emails throughout the day. Being a stay at home mom and trying to work at the same time can be very challenging, but I wouldn't change anything. I am thankful that I can make memories with Michael while doing something I love.

What is your favorite piece in your shop and how did you come up with it?

My favorite piece has to be my personalized Doc McStuffins Treat Bags. This is the first product I ever crafted for my shop. The bags were for my niece's 4th birthday party. I will never forget the excitement on her face when she saw the bags; it's the little things in life :)

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Most of my inspiration comes from customers wanting specific items tailored to the particular needs of the party they are planning. I also like to find ways to alter items to make them more unique and/or personalized.

Where do you see your shop in the future? What are your aspirations for it?

My shop has been open for about six months and I am already excited about the future! My mind never shuts off and I'm always brainstorming new ideas. In the future, I'm hoping to expand my Instagram account and build a webpage and blog. There are a lot of new and exciting things to come!

Any advice for other small businesses or momtrepreneurs?

Never stop believing in yourself and don't be afraid to take risks.

What are some of YOUR favorite shops and small businesses?

I have worked with some incredible people along this journey and most of them include other small shop owners:

The Blue Envelope - tees inspired by kids and the ones who love them. We love all of our shirts!

Simply Addison - the cutest/softest headbands for your little ones.

My Hero Headquarters - makes awesome superhero capes! Michael loves his!
